About the Area

As the oldest English settlement in North America, St. John’s has a rich history. Along with the surrounding area, the city offers many modern amenities, as well as great hospitality, all in a beautiful, natural setting.

Once known for its long and prosperous history in the fishing industry, St. John’s has recently become a modern export and service centre. Along with recently discovered oil fields just off the coast, St. John’s is also well known for its nightlife and rich musical culture. For these reasons, it is not surprising that the St. John’s area now accounts for about half of the province’s economic output.
